Salt Spring Centre of Yoga

The universe works in mysterious ways. After nearly 20 years of practicing yoga, it was last winter (2013) that I decided to take my practice to another level. At the time I didn’t quite know what style I wanted to practice or where I should attend a teacher training. There are so many trainings out there but not one singular location seemed to resonate with my true SELF. During the winter I was fortunate to spend some time with the very talented professional snowboarder Travis Rice and his longtime love Evan Mack. Evan, a certified teacher herself and I discussed my desire to go through training and she immediately (and passionately) began researching nearby Ashtanga Teacher Training schools in the British Columbia area. I remember her intensity like it was yesterday. I was filled with joy that a girl that I had just met was so passionate about helping me find the ‘right’ school for me to attend. She came across the Salt Spring Centre of Yoga. We discussed the non-profit organization, the farm table food, the 70 acre working farm, the Karma Yogi program, the YTT curriculum, its faculty, history and its founder and inspiration Guru Baba Hari Dass. After that moment, everything seemed to happen so fast. I immediately applied, filled out my application and never looked back. It just seemed to be the right place for the transformational journey. 6 months later, I found myself with on Salt Spring Island with 28 other young and passionate yoga teachers to be. Below is slide show I put together of my time at the centre. Enjoy! To learn more about the Salt Spring Centre of Yoga.

Classical Ashtanga & Hatha Traditions

There are so many different styles of yoga to choose from. Below is short description of the style that Triputi Yoga offers.

Ashtanga (Sanskrit for “eight limbed”)
Ashtanga yoga is named after the eight limbs of yoga mentioned in the yoga sutra’s of Patanjali. * We will flow smoothly from one pose to the next, creating space and opportunity for movement, while developing Triputi – the concentration of linking body, breath and mind.

Hatha Yoga (Sanskrit for HA meaning sun and THA meaning moon)  A gentle style yogic practice. Hatha is a great place for beginners to start. You will learn basic poses, relaxation techniques and terminology that you will find in most other styles of yoga.

* This class is not the same as Ashtanga Vinyasa Yoga as taught by students of K. Pattabhi Jois.

Isha Elafi Handcrafted Art

We are honored to carry the exquisite jewelry of Isha Elafia. Learn more about Isha and her work here.

A long, long time ago I began knotting “micro-macramé’. It was 1978 and flower-power was still fresh in the air. In those early years, I was using nylon fishing line which I dyed by hand in many radiant colors, and wooden beads and semi-precious stones. And that’s how I began my journey on this wonderful planet – a journey fueled by the little bracelets I made, literally knotting my way about the world. I worked as I traveled, and sold my pieces in markets from Peru to India. The new worlds of cultures and colors I encountered inspired my designs and offered new materials to incorporate into my work. Over the decades the style and elements in my macramé have changed, but the energy involved in creating this handmade jewelry has remained a joy for me and I hope for those who wear it! Now I use mostly sterling silver set semi-precious stones and fossils found on my continued travels. The nylon thread is brilliant and durable. The pieces can be washed with soap and water and if the silver needs polishing a toothbrush with good toothpaste will shine that right up! This way of linking beautiful natural things with colorful threads is so satisfying for me since I am a painter as well and this is another road to express the way colors touch me. Each person has their own color scheme and stones which harmonize with their spirit. I have often seen that when a person picks the perfect necklace for their feeling and coloring the necklace changes from an inanimate piece of jewelry on a piece of material. It actually comes alive, and the wearer becomes radiant! My goal is to continue to enjoy this beautiful dimension and share creation but keeping it unique and full of heart!
